The City of Thousand Oaks operates a permanent, state-of-the-art Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility, open to residents of Thousand Oaks & unincorporated Ventura County (e.g. Lake Sherwood, Santa Rosa Valley, El Rio, Saticoy, Piru). Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be “Household Hazardous Materials” or “HHW.” Products such as cleaners, oils, batteries, fluorescent lights and pesticides require special care when you dispose of them. Appointments are required in order to drop off household hazardous waste at the facility. Find out how the program works below.

How The Program Works:
Review the list of accepted materials to see if your items qualify as hazardous waste and are eligible for drop-off.
Appointments are required for HHW drop-offs
Click here to schedule an appointment online or contact our partners at Clean Harbors Environmental Services at (800) 356-8570 to make, change, or cancel an appointment Mon-Fri 8AM - 5PM. Their staff members are knowledgeable and may answer any questions you may have about program operations, materials accepted, proper packaging and transport, and more.
Online registration closes at 5 PM the day prior to the disposal date. Appointment times are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The HHW Facility will not cancel events in the event of rain or inclement weather.

On the day of your appointment:
- Ensure you bring a valid photo ID, utility bill, or other means of identification to verify residency (you must live in Thousand Oaks or unincorporated Ventura County)
- Properly package and carefully transport your hazardous waste to the collection site
- Arrive promptly at your scheduled time
- When you arrive at the HHW Facility, follow the signs and painted arrows to circle around the rear of the facility in a u-shaped direction
- Come to a stop just before the unloading area to check in with the greeter who will check your identification
- Pull forward when signaled by facility staff who will instruct you on where to stop your vehicle in the unloading area. You will be instructed to turn off your vehicle and are required to REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLE at all times. No smoking is allowed on the premises for safety purposes.
- A Clean Harbors Environmental Services technician will unload the hazardous materials from your vehicle and send you on your way!
Please note: all containers brought to the facility will not be returned (except for used oil collection containers). Read here for more information prior to your visit.

*State law restricts the transportation of HHW to no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle.
Unaccepted Materials:
- Biological waste

- Radioactive materials

- Controlled substances
- Explosives/ammunition
- Tires
- Appliances (includes anything with freon)
- Media (CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, VHS and audio cassette tapes) - click here to recycle them
Material Reuse Program
The Material Reuse Program operates alongside the City's weekly Household Hazardous Waste collection and is located at the HHW Facility. Appointments are not needed to shop at the City's Material Reuse Store.

Battery Recycling
Household batteries of all sizes (AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9 Volt, etc.), both rechargeable and single use are considered hazardous waste when discarded. All household batteries may be recycled at the City's HHW Facility or at the drop-off locations below. Please note: automotive and industrial batteries are not accepted at these drop locations. Automotive and industrial batteries may be recycled at the HHW Facility.
Warning: Lithium button batteries are very dangerous to children and pets. Improper handling or storage may result in death or injury.

Disposal tips for the community battery disposal bins: no plastic bags; deposit used alkaline and rechargeable household batteries only; tape battery contacts; no automotive or motorcycle batteries.

Fluorescent Light Disposal and Broken Bulb Handling
You may bring any size or type of fluorescent and LED bulbs to the City's Hazardous Waste Facility.
Broken fluorescent bulbs require immediate attention to minimize exposure to mercury vapor contained in the glass tubing. If a fluorescent bulb breaks in your home, view the EPA's guidelines on how to respond properly.
