FREE Oil Change Kit

If you’re a Do-It-Yourselfer and like to change your own oil and filter, pick up a FREE Oil Change Kit from the Thousand Oaks Hazardous Waste Facility. This kits contains everything you need to safely change and transport your used oil and filters to a Certified Used Oil Collection Center.

Recycle Used Oil

Did you know that used motor oil can be cleaned and used again and again? Used motor oil and filters can be dropped off at Certified Used Oil Collection Centers for proper recycling and disposal. A list of centers in the Thousand Oaks area to drop off these materials is provided at the bottom of this page. You can also make an appointment to drop off oil and filters at the City's Hazardous Waste Facility in Newbury Park. The following things should be kept in mind when planning to dispose of used oil and filters: 

• Call centers for hours of operation, quantity limits, and to find out whether filters are accepted. Usually up to 5 gallons of oil per day, per resident, are accepted but it can vary from center to center.
• $0.40 cents per gallon reimbursement is available.
• Place oil in five gallon (or smaller) containers which have tight seals and are pourable. 
• For those locations that accept filters, drain and place in a plastic bag.
• It is illegal to leave oil after business hours.
• It is against the law to put used oil in the trash, on the ground, or in the storm drain system.
• Do not contaminate oil by mixing with any other automotive or household products -- it will not be accepted.
