DART

The Thousand Oaks Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) is a well-organized group of trained, local citizen volunteers. Members volunteer their time and energy in being prepared to assist local government and public safety agencies in serving the Conejo Valley and Ventura County of Southern California.

DART receives funding from the City of Thousand Oaks and is administered by the Thousand Oaks Police Department. DART is called upon by the Police, Sheriff, and Fire Departments to assist in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

Explorers Program

As a Law Enforcement Explorer you will participate in the following functions: patrol ride-alongs, community service, traffic control, station work, fingerprinting, and search and rescue. Explorer meetings are held at the Thousand Oaks Police Department on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Anyone who is interested in joining the Explorer Program can show up at the meeting with no prior reservation needed. If you are between the ages of 14 and 21 years old, maintain a 2.0 GPA at school, and have a good driving record, you can be eligible to become a Law Enforcement Explorer.

Citizen Academy

The Citizen Academy is a dynamic and highly acclaimed program offered to residents by the Thousand Oaks Police Department; where they can learn about law enforcement and the criminal justice system. The 12-week Academy program familiarizes people with the law enforcement role in society. Participants learn how officers are trained, visit the Sheriff's Detention facilities, talk to Investigators, and see specialized teams such as SWAT, Hostage Negotiators, Bomb Technicians and K-9 handlers in action.

The primary goal of the Citizen Academy is not to make police officers out of the participants, but to present law enforcement in a manner that will dispel public misunderstandings and promote valuable and lasting relationships. The main "message" for participants is that police officers and deputy sheriffs are dedicated and professional public servants whose concern for the people they serve is at the heart of everything they do.

Volunteers In Policing

The Volunteers in Policing (VIP) program currently has over 90 active members who provide ancillary support to police personnel assigned to the Thousand Oaks Police Department.  They contribute an average of 35,000 hours per year to the program. The VIP's issue parking citations, respond to selected report calls, conduct vacation house checks, and most recently have been trained to assist with residential security surveys. VIP members must attend the Citizen Academy, VIP Academy, and then receive training both inside the classroom and out in the field. Those VIP's not interested in the patrol function may participate at the Resource Centers, providing valuable services to the community in the form of fingerprinting and dispensing information.
