THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., September 12, 2023- The City of Thousand Oaks has launched a new campaign to provide tools and resources to neighborhoods looking to increase the number of children walking and biking to school. Walk to School Thousand Oaks, Walk2schoolto.org, is a one-stop hub for all things related to promoting walking and biking to school. With an array of practical resources, helpful tips, and interactive maps, this website is set to inspire and encourage families to take advantage of the benefits of walking to school, including improved health, reduced traffic congestion, and stronger community connections.
Mayor Kevin McNamee expressed his excitement about the launch of Walk2SchoolTO.org, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the Thousand Oaks community:
"I am thrilled to see the Walk to School Thousand Oaks toolkit come to life in our community. Encouraging students to walk and bike to school promotes physical activity and fosters a sense of camaraderie and connection among neighbors. It reduces traffic congestion, making our streets safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable for everyone. This grassroots initiative exemplifies our commitment to a sustainable future for Thousand Oaks, and I look forward to seeing our residents embrace the benefits of walking and biking to school."
Engaging event suggestions include ‘Cross with a Councilmember,’ where communities can invite a council member to cross with children at their neighborhood staffed crossing point, or ‘Superhero Day,’ where adults can dress up as a superhero to make the morning or afternoon walk a stroll to remember.
In addition to the tools and resources to help organize events, the website extensively covers the City Crossing Guard Program execution and standards. Current information on crosswalk counts, crossing guard placement, training, and more is available to explain better the City’s program in support of Conejo Valley Unified School District.
Walk2SchoolTO.org is a collaborative effort brought forth by community members, educators, local organizations, and the Thousand Oaks city government. It embodies our shared vision of creating safer, healthier, and more vibrant neighborhoods.
