August Programs at the Thousand Oaks Library

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., August 1, 2023- The following is a list of programs happening at the Thousand Oaks Library during the month of August:

ALL AGES  

Summer Reading Club 

All ages are invited to join the Thousand Oaks Library’s Summer Reading Club now through August 12, 2023. Register, read, and earn rewards. Free, fun events all summer long! 

KIDS 

Juggler David Cousin   

Join us for a fun-filled show with David Cousin, who holds 5 World Records in juggling. This program will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, from 11:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room and 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Newbury Park Library Meeting Room. Recommended for ages 5+ 

Music & Movement with Cheryl 

Dance, clap and sing along with Cheryl Lev and her guitar during this fun, interactive program. Ages: 0-5 years. This program will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023 and August 11, 2023 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. Registration required. 

Lego Play @ Your Library 

Duplo bricks are available for younger builders. This program will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, from 11:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room and 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Newbury Park Library Meeting Room. Recommended for ages 5+ 

Parent & Child Class for Toddlers 

Enjoy 20 minutes of simple stories and songs with Ms. Karen. Monday, August 7, 2023, at the Grant R. Brimhall Library from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. For ages 12-36 months. Registration required.  

Magician Dave Skale   

From his wacky antics for kids, to his amazing sleight-of-hand, Dave is sure to entertain all! This program will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, from 11:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room and 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Newbury Park Library Meeting Room. Recommended for ages 5+ 

Find Your Singing Voice: Make Music!     

Explore the magical world of music-making and let your voice soar! From fun musical games to harmonizing with fellow singers, this engaging introduction to singing is perfect for all music-lovers! Presented by award-winning Los Robles Children's Choir. This program will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023, from 11:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. Recommended for ages 5+  

TEENS 

CReATE STUDIO: Me Jars 

Create “Me Jars” filled with keepsakes, decorations, and your own writings to inspire you. This program will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Teen Space. Registration recommended. 

For Fun Spelling Bee 

Try your luck at a for-fun spelling bee. Registration is required for spelling participants. Families and all ages are welcome to watch. This program will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. The spelling bee for Tweens (Grades 6-8) will be from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. for Teens (Grades 9-12).  

Find Your Voice – One Page Contest 

Tell us in one page how to “Find Your Voice”. Write or draw your story. Enter for a chance to win a $50 gift card. Submission forms and details at the Library. Only for Tweens and Teens Grades 6-12. Submissions due August 12, 2023. 

Genre Badge Buttons 

Earn badge buttons all summer long for reading books in different genres and completing a scavenger hunt in the Library. Recommended for Tweens and Teens Grades 6-12. Forms available inside the library only! 

Reading Rocks Book Club 

Join us monthly to discuss books with strong female characters. This program will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Program Room. Small Rocks/Grades 4-5 will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Big Rocks/Grades 6-8 will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Registration Required. 

ADULTS  

Voice of the Oaks Podcast 

A Thousand Oaks Library podcast that alternates between three librarians chatting about books, libraries, and everything in between, and interviews with members of the Thousand Oaks community. Listen to a new episode every month! 

Book Bingo 

Win a Summer Reading Club-themed gift basket by completing the SRC Book Bingo. 

Get "Bingo" by reading five books in a row on our SRC Bingo Card and writing down the title of each book and the author's name in the square it relates to. Turn in the filled-out Book Bingo Card online or at the Library between June 19 - August 12, and you will be entered to win! Ages 18+ only. You can download the Book Bingo Card or get a physical copy at the Library. To submit your Book Bingo Card, turn it in at one of the Library Reference Desks, or upload it digitally and submit your information using the online form. 

Conversations with Mom     

This free support group is for moms and their newborns to get together in a relaxed environment to express their joys and concerns. A safe place to ask questions and meet other new moms in the community. This program will be held on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Children's Program Room.     

Toastmasters: How to Speak Publicly 

Learn from masters of public speaking how to give speeches, presentations, and how to succeed when talking in front of a crowd. This program will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room.  

Classical Violin and Piano with Keum Hwa Cha and Hui Wu   

Classical musicians Keum Hwa Cha and Hui Wu will perform a piano and violin duet for all ages. This program will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. 

Board Game Club 

Love strategy board games but have a difficult time finding a consistent group to play with? Us too! Adults are invited to join us monthly to play games like Forbidden Island, Dungeon Mayhem, and Wingspan, or bring your own games to share with others! 

This program will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room.  

Free Movie Matinées 

Watch free movie matinées twice a month at the library! View the movie schedule online. This program will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023 and Monday, August 21 at 1:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. 

How to Podcast with Ken Napzok 

Learn how to create your own podcast with professional podcaster Ken Napzok. This program will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. 

English as a Second Language (ESL) Conversation Group 

Practice speaking English in an informal and friendly group setting. This program will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Tech Training Room.  

Mindful Art Studio    

Unleash your creativity and discover the soothing power of art! Select from an array of relaxing art activities like coloring, dot-to-dot art, sticker-by-numbers, scratch art, and more. All materials provided. Walk-ins welcome. Adults only. This program will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. 

Many Voices Book Club 

Join us in reading and discussing books in a wide variety of genres by authors from a wide variety of cultures. Our book this month is The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah. Registration required. This program will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Tech Training Room. 

Crafternoon with CREaTE Studio: Embroidery  

Explore the art of embroidery to create a colorful Sunflower or favorite flower! No prior embroidery skills needed. All Materials Provided. This program will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Community Room. Registration required.
