City Announces Temporary Change to Local Bus Routes

Changes are being made to Bus Route 42 Midtown B effective November 20, 2021, until further notice. Service on this route will be suspended through at least the end of the calendar year.

Mike Houser, Transit Manager notes “We are taking this unprecedented step due to on-going staff shortages that have caused interruptions to bus services locally for nearly 30 days in the past two months. Due to the pandemic and other factors, the contractor operating the service is severely short-staffed. This is a condition impacting many transit providers in the region that have announced similar service cutbacks.”

The decision to temporarily suspend service of a local bus route was taken in consideration of our bus riders that have been subject to near daily, interruptions of service on Route 42 and to our Dial-a-Ride participants who are seeing widespread unavailability of ride times, due to driver shortages. Route 42 was selected for suspension based on ridership and because much of the route is duplicated by Route 41 Midtown A, which includes many of the same stops but operates in the opposite direction.

The City’s transit contractor, MV Transportation, Inc., is working diligently to hire new staff to support operations. Further, the City and MV are in contract negotiations which may positively impact the recruitment of new staff.

Notices will be posted at the impacted bus stops this week as well as on-board the buses. Additional information regarding this temporary suspension is located on the Thousand Oaks Transit website,, and on social media. Riders impacted by this temporary service change are encouraged to call the bus information line, (805) 375-5467 for assistance with trip planning using other routes.

All public transit services continue to be fare free at this time, with free transfers to VCTC Intercity bus services.
