 Children

Homework Help

Students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade can get free homework help from volunteers at the Grant R. Brimhall Library and Newbury Park Library. Mondays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Newbury Park Library. Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Grant R. Brimhall Library. All programs are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice. No registration required.

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies is a free program for elementary school-aged students. Children in Grades 1-4 will gain confidence in their reading with the help of an interactive Volunteer reading buddy.  Monday through Wednesday, November 1, 2021 through November 17, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday sessions are at Grant R. Brimhall Library, Tuesdays are virtual on Zoom, and Wednesdays are at Newbury Park Library.

Dog Days

Young readers can sign up for a brief 10-minute session with a certified therapy dog and their owner. Tuesdays, November 2, 2021 through Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Children’s Library Program Room at Grant R. Brimhall Library and Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Newbury Park Library. No session on November 23, 2021. Registration required.

Baby Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library for 20 minutes of lap sit storytime for babies 0 – 12 months. This program will be held on Tuesdays, November 2, 2021 through November 16, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. Registration is required for each in person date. Space is limited. Physical distancing will be maintained. No walk-ins.

Toddler Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library for 20 minutes of storytime for toddlers 1 – 3 years old. This program will be held on Wednesdays, November 3, 2021 through November 17, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. Registration is required for each in person date. Space is limited. Physical distancing will be maintained. No walk-ins.

Preschool Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library for 30 minutes of storytime for children ages 3 – 5 years old. This program will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021 and November 18, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. No session on November 23, 2021. Registration is required for each in person date. Space is limited. Physical distancing will be maintained. No walk-ins.

Cleaning out the Cupboard Craft

Students in Grades K-5 are invited to create a random craft in Grant R. Brimhall Library's outdoor courtyard patio. The program will be hosted in-person on Wednesday, November 3 and November 4, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration is required.

Girls Read Book Club 

Students in Grades 4-5 are encouraged to join us monthly to discuss books with strong female

characters. The book club will meet on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Children's Library program room. Registration required.

Local Author "STEAM" Book Reading

Join author Kristen Nordstrom as she reads excerpts from her debut book “Mimic Makers: Biomimicry Inventors Inspired by Nature” and shares a simple STEAM craft. For students in Grades 2 - 5. The program will be hosted in-person on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Community Room.

Library Scavenger Hunt

Students in Grades 6-12 are invited to participate in a scavenger hunt between November 1, 2021 and November 30, 2021. Pick up a worksheet at either Grant R. Brimhall Library or Newbury Park Library. Submit a completed worksheet by the end of the month to be entered for a chance to win a gift card.

Big Library Read

It’s time for #BigLibraryRead! Visit the Libby app between November 1 -15, 2021 to borrow the featured title ‘Five Total Strangers’ by New York Times Bestselling Author, Natalie D. Richards, with no waitlists or holds.

Cookie Cutters and Ornaments

Watch a demonstration on how to use TinkerCAD (Computer Aided Design) to design your very own holiday cookie cutters or ornaments that can be 3D printed at the library. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about the library’s 3D printing services and ask your questions about 3D printing. The program will be hosted in-person in the Teen Space at Grant R. Brimhall Library on Sunday, November 14, 2021 and Sunday, December 5, 2021 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Registration required.

Adults

Conversations with Mom

This free, ongoing group is an opportunity for moms and their newborns to get together in a relaxed environment to express the joys and concerns of being a new mother. This support group covers a variety of topics, offering the opportunity to meet new moms in the community, and provides a place to ask questions and get information. The group is facilitated by Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Kimberly Zevallos (Lic. #80021) of Counseling Conejo Valley. Call 805-410-4541 for more information. Tuesdays from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Courtyard. Registration is required for each date. Space is limited. No walk-ins. ESL Conversation Group

This program is open to all non-native English language speakers who are interested in developing their speaking fluency. Participants of varying levels of English proficiency are welcome. The program will be hosted on the first Thursday of the month on November 4, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Registration required.

Microsoft PowerPoint: Basics

Learn to create amazing slide presentations that can integrate images, video, narration, charts, and more on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at Newbury Park Library.

Virtual Open Mic Poetry

Join us for a joint program between the Thousand Oaks Library and The Ventura County Poetry Project as we present Open Mic Poetry Nights. Come listen to local poets and share your own work every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Every fourth Wednesday will include a reading from a guest reader. Open Mic will be hosted via Zoom on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 and November 24, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Google Sheets

Create powerful spreadsheets that you can edit from anywhere, or open and edit existing Excel spreadsheets. Prerequisites: You must have a Google Gmail account prior to class and be familiar with using a keyboard and mouse.  For help with establishing a Google Gmail account, please make an appointment through Book a Librarian. Thursday, November 18, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
