Craft Kits-to-Go: DIY Puzzle Kit

Design your own fabulous fall DIY puzzle. Kits are available at the Grant R. Brimhall Library’s Children’s Help Desk and the Newbury Park Library Information Desk during open hours. Visit the Library’s website for this month’s craft video. For ages 5+. Adults are welcome to participate. One kit per library card. While supplies last.

Homework Help

Students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade can get free homework help from volunteers at the Grant R. Brimhall Library and Newbury Park Library. Mondays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Newbury Park Library. Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Grant R. Brimhall Library. All programs are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice. No registration required

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies is a program for elementary school-aged students. It is free to participate in the program, thanks to the generous support of volunteers. The goal of the program is for children in 1st through 4th grades to gain confidence in their reading with the help of an interactive Volunteer reading buddy.  Monday through Wednesday, October 4, 2021 through November 17, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday sessions are at Grant R. Brimhall Library, Tuesdays are virtual on Zoom, and Wednesdays are at Newbury Park Library.

Dog Days

Young readers can sign up for a brief 10-minute session with a certified therapy dog and their owner. Tuesdays, October 5, 2021 through Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the outdoor courtyard at Grant R. Brimhall Library and Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Newbury Park Library. Registration required.

Baby Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library for 20 minutes of lap sit storytime for babies 0-12 months. This program will be held on Tuesdays, October 5, 2021 through October 26, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. Registration is required for each in person date. Space is limited. Physical distancing will be maintained. No walk-ins.

Toddler Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library for 20 minutes of storytime for toddlers 1 – 3 years old. This program will be held on Wednesdays, October 6, 2021 through October 27, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. Registration is required for each in person date. Space is limited. Physical distancing will be maintained. No walk-ins.

Preschool Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library for 30 minutes of storytime for children ages 3 – 5 years old. This program will be held on Thursdays, October 7, 2021 through October 28, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Registration is required for each in person date. Space is limited. Physical distancing will be maintained. No walk-ins.

STEM Program: Owl Pellets

Join us in the Grant R. Brimhall Library’s courtyard and explore an owl pellet. Piece together clues to discover what an owl eats! For grades K-5th and their family members. An adult must be present with each group. For safety, all members of your party are required to wear masks and gloves during this program. Gloves and masks will be provided. Participants will not be able to take home any remnants discovered from their owl pellet. Thursday, October 7 or October 14, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Each family group attending is limited to a maximum of 5 people.  All programs are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice.  Registration closes 12 hours before the program begins. Registration does not guarantee admittance. Participants spots may be given away if more than 10 minutes late.

Virtual Early Readers Book Club 

Join the library for a virtual reading and discussion of a book. Book discussions encourage young readers to explore literature while promoting a love of reading. This program does not teach children to read but aims to excite children about reading by exploring books. Each month, participants will be introduced to a book that we will read aloud with the group, followed by an activity. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Monday, October 18, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. This month’s selection is “On Account of the Gum” by Adam Rex. Registration required.

Halloween Outdoor Family Movie Night: Disney Pixar’s Coco

Bring your own seat, blanket & snacks to enjoy the movie on October 23, 2021 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Newbury Park Library parking lot.

Check our virtual teen space for writing prompts, puzzles and brainteasers, and book recommendations from the Thousand Oaks Teen Advisory League.

Speak Up! Public Speaking Workshop for Middle Schoolers

Join us for a friendly teen-led workshop series on encouraging and guiding middle schoolers through public speaking techniques, tips and guidance. The workshops will be hosted on Friday, October 15, Saturday, October 16, and Sunday, October 17, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration required.

Spooky Stories for Tweens and Teens

Learn about some of our new and favorite Spooky Scary Stories. Teen Volunteers and our Teen Librarian will talk about their favorite books and stories on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration required.

Adults

ESL Conversation Group

This program is open to all non-native English language speakers who are interested in developing their speaking fluency. Participants of varying levels of English proficiency are welcome. The program will be hosted on the first Thursday of the month on October 7, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Registration required.

Conversations with Mom

This free, ongoing group is an opportunity for moms and their newborns to get together in a relaxed environment to express the joys and concerns of being a new mother. This support group covers a variety of topics, offering the opportunity to meet new moms in the community, and provides a place to ask questions and get information. The group is facilitated by Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Kimberly Zevallos (Lic. #80021) of Counseling Conejo Valley. Call 805-410-4541 for more information. Tuesdays from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Courtyard. Registration is required for each date. Space is limited. No walk-ins. Microsoft Excel Basic 2: Working with Numbers

Learn how cells, formatting, formulas, and charts can be used for budgets, record keeping, and statistical reports. Tuesday, October 12, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the Newbury Park Library Tech Space.

Virtual Open Mic Poetry

Join us for a joint program between the Thousand Oaks Library and The Ventura County Poetry Project as we present Open Mic Poetry Nights. Come listen to local poets and share your own work every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Every fourth Wednesday will include a reading from a guest reader. Open Mic will be hosted via Zoom on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 and October 27, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Intermediate Genealogy

After taking the basic genealogy class, are you incredibly excited about genealogy? Do you want more? Are you ready to receive even more powerful ways to learn about your ancestors? This is your chance! Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Registration is required.

Google Drive for Beginners

Learn how to create, format, save, download and upload documents, and collaborate with others on Google Drive, a Cloud-based storage.  Prerequisites: You must have a Google Gmail account prior to class and be familiar with using a keyboard and mouse.  For help with establishing a Google Gmail account, please make an appointment through Book a Librarian. Thursday, October 28, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
