Children

Summer Reading Club

Unlock the magic of reading at the Thousand Oaks Library! Readers of all ages are invited to sign up and participate in a newly designed virtual Summer Reading Club (SRC) from June 1, 2021 to July 31, 2021. Earn points and badges by logging reading minutes and completing activities. Earn 1,000 points to receive a small prize and be entered in the Grand Prize Opportunity Drawing. The library will also host free programs and challenges to encourage and support a love of reading. The theme this summer is “Imagine Your Story” and centers around fables, fairytales, folklore, and legends. While many may be staying close to home this summer, readers can go anywhere using their imagination! Sign up for SRC at www.tolibrary.org/src.

Take & Make: Flip Book

Register for a free Flip Book kit between July 1 - 20, 2021 and pick up before the end of the month. Participants will receive a confirmation email when their kit is ready for pickup. For ages 5+. Adults are welcome to participate. One kit per library card. While supplies last.

Reading Buddies

Virtual Reading Buddies is a program for elementary school-aged students. It is free to participate in the program, thanks to the generous support of volunteers. The goal of the program is for children in 1st through 4th grades to gain confidence in their reading with the help of an interactive Volunteer reading buddy.  A parent or guardian must be present during the Zoom session. This series will be hosted via Zoom on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, July 6, 2021 through July 28, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Virtual Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library online for Virtual Storytime from July 7, 2021 through July 28, 2021. Storytime videos are available to watch on the library's website or Facebook page on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

Virtual Bingo for Children

Children ages 4 through 8 and their family members are invited to play a virtual game of a picture bingo. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Registration required.

Early Readers Virtual Book Club 

Join the library for a virtual reading and discussion of a book. Book discussions encourage young readers to explore literature while promoting a love of reading. This program does not teach children to read but aims to excite children about reading by exploring books. Each month, participants will be introduced to a book that we will read aloud with the group, followed by an activity. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Monday, July 19, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Registration required.

Writing Prompts: Share Your Work!

Children in Grades 2 – 5 are invited to read aloud their summer writing prompt responses to a group of peers. Participants can also submit their stories to be featured on the library’s Kid Corner Padlet board. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and Saturday, July 31, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registration required.

Bilingual Storytime

Join the Thousand Oaks Library online for Virtual Bilingual Storytime on July 29, 2021. Bilingual Storytime videos are available to watch on the library's website or Facebook page on the last Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m.

Summer 2021 Volunteer Opportunities for Teens

Learn about volunteer opportunities over the summer at Thousand Oaks Library. Complete your application to be notified of all opportunities as they become available. For teens ages 14-19.

Creative Writing Workshop

Tweens and Teens are encouraged to join a writing workshop and develop a story inspired by creative writing prompts. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration required.

Scholarship Strategies Workshop

In this two-part series, high school students, college students, and parents can learn the best strategies for searching and applying for scholarships to help pay for college. This program is presented by Medina College Consulting. Sponsored by the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Registration required.

Researching Colleges and Universities

High school students and parents can receive guidance from an admissions counselor about researching colleges and universities. Learn how to determine the right college fit for you and your family with speaker Shelden Agbayani, Admissions Counselor at California Lutheran University (CLU). The program will be hosted via Zoom on Thursday, July 22, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration required.

Kahoot Trivia Tuesday

Students in Grades 6-12 can play virtual trivia on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 and July 27, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration required. 

Adults

ESL Conversation Group

This program is open to all non-native English language speakers who are interested in developing their speaking fluency. Participants of varying levels of English proficiency are welcome. The program will be hosted via Zoom on the first Tuesday of the month on July 6, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Registration required.  

Conversations with Mom Online

This free, ongoing group is an opportunity for moms and their newborns to get together virtually in a relaxed environment to express the joys and concerns of being a new mother. Facilitated by Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Kimberly Zevallos (Lic. #80021) of Counseling Conejo Valley. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Registration required.

Open Mic Poetry

Join us for a joint program between the Thousand Oaks Library and The Ventura County Poetry Project as we present Open Mic Poetry Nights. Come listen to local poets and share your own work every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Every fourth Wednesday will include a reading from a guest reader. Open Mic will be hosted via Zoom on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 and July 28, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Thousand Oaks Library Film Club – What We Do In The Shadows

Based on the same format as a book club, this once-a-month film club is a place for film lovers to meet and talk about a movie they have watched in the last month. Movies are selected from the digital collection available on Kanopy and can be watched there before each meeting. Librarians will lead a discussion on each film and participants are invited to bring everything they liked, disliked, and any other thoughts. Participants must be 17 or older. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

B.Y.O. Book Club

In a new take on book clubs, the Thousand Oaks Library invites readers to bring their current or recent read to discuss with others. A perfect way to find new book recommendations!  Whether it be a mystery, biography, graphic novel, fantasy, romance, thriller, history, or science fiction, all genres are welcome at the Bring Your Own Book Club. Registration required. The program will be hosted via Zoom on Monday, July 26, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
