Curbside Trash and Recycling Collection Services: 
The Curbside Recycling Program accepts plastic containers with numbers 1 – 7, glass bottles, jars, metal cans, newspapers, phone books, cardboard, empty and dry paint cans, junk mail, paper bags, and empty aerosol cans. Contact your trash hauler for any trash, recycling, or yard trimmings related issues. Visit Trash, Yard Trimmings and Recycling Services for more information.

  • Information in Spanish is offered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on a wide variety of issues, from health questions to recycling to pesticide management. To view EPA's Spanish site, visit: www.epa.gov/espanol
  • Environmental Education using English as a Second Language (ESL) - Visit Resources for Multi-Cultural Education which offers three free downloadable textbooks (12 languages in all) that teach recycling and education on environmental issues for everyone.
  • Battery Recycling - Turn in your old batteries at one of the many convenient locations!
  • Beverage Container Recycling Centers - Turn in your plastic, glass, and aluminum beverage containers at one of the many redemption centers in Thousand Oaks. Visit Beverage Container Redemption Centers for more information.
  • Bulky Item Pickup - Annually, a City of Thousand Oaks resident may request up to two free collections and a total of four bulky items per calendar year (some limitations apply).  Bulky item pickup is available through your trash company. Call your disposal company for details: Waste Management (Thousand Oaks and Westlake areas) at (805) 522-9400, or Newbury Disposal (Newbury Park area) at (800) 418-7274.   • Planning to move? Download a copy of Odds n' Ends, provided by the Ventura County Environmental and Energy Resources Department, on Countywide programs for disposal of hard to handle items.
  • Plastic Bag Recycling - Click here to search for participating grocery stores and recycling centers in your area that accept clean, dry, empty plastic bags (i.e., plastic grocery, retail, newspaper, and dry cleaning bags) for recycling. For information on Packing Material/Plastic Peanut Recycling, call the Peanut Hotline at (800) 828-2214, for the nearest collection site. You can also call to see if your local mailing store will accept extra packaging peanuts.
  • Recycle those tennis shoes! The City of Thousand Oaks is part of a national program to collect and recycle athletic shoes. All brands of old athletic shoes (sneakers), along with defective pairs donated by Nike, are collected, ground up and turned into surfaces for use on local athletic courts. Waste Management, Harrison Industries and Gold Coast Recycling support the program. Shoes must be clean and free of mud with no metal, cleats, or spikes.   • Scavenging of Recyclables - Recyclables collected by the City's franchised haulers help offset refuse/recycling service costs, scavenging of recyclables placed for collection is illegal. Persons witnessing scavenging should report the incident to the Thousand Oaks Police Department at (805) 494-8200

Composting and GrasscyclingThe City of Thousand Oaks sponsors free home composting workshops and offers discounted compost bins to City residents. Visit Home Composting for information on purchasing a compost bin.  Discounted compost bins are available to residents in the incorporated areas of Thousand Oaks only.

  • Food Waste Collection - Californians throw away more than five million tons of food scraps each year, which is equal to 16 percent of all disposed materials going into our landfills from businesses, residents, and institutions, such as schools and prisons. This website provides food scrap prevention tips, lists of local food banks, food rescue programs, and on-site and off-site composting options. Regional compost workshops and special event information is also available. To help feed those in need throughout Ventura County, visit www.foodshare.com for food drive collection locations.
  • Integrated Pest Management Program - Downloadable information on less toxic alternatives for pest management, provided by the County of Ventura, Solid Waste Management Department. Click here for more information.

Household Hazardous Waste Program - The City of Thousand Oaks offers free Hazardous Waste Collection Days, by appointment, serving residents of Thousand Oaks and participating communities. Community Enhancement Grant Program - Provides grants for nonprofit community and school groups to raise money to support group activities. Click here for more information.

Landfill Disposal Day (FREE) - Thousand Oaks residents (proof of residency required) can bring trash for FREE disposal at Simi Valley Landfill. Click here for future dates and information on items accepted for disposal.

Neighborhood Clean Up Program (FREE) - The Community Enhancement Program gives Thousand Oaks residents the opportunity to host clean up events right in their own neighborhood. Click here for more information.
