Program Guidelines
  • On your regular service day, please place your trash cart, yard trimmings cart, and recycling cart (when at least half full) at the curb prior to 7:00 a.m.
  • Place carts at least three feet apart as shown above, and six feet from parked cars, mailboxes, or other obstructions.
  • Cart handles and wheels should face toward your home.
  • Cart lids must be down for collection.
  • Except on collection days, carts must be stored out of general public view after collection.
  • Carts may not be serviced if they are over-filled or exceed maximum container weight, are inaccessible, or contaminated with unacceptable material.
  • Carts must be filled so that material will fall freely when serviced.
  • Additional and/or larger carts may be ordered for a nominal fee.
  • Recyclables collected in the program are listed below.
Additional Information
  • G.I. Industries and Newbury Disposal use clean burning natural gas trucks as part of an effort to reduce air pollution.
  • Annually, each Thousand Oaks household, including apartments, may request up to two free collections with a total of no more than four bulky items per year.
  • Individuals at least 62 years of age that are head of household are eligible for a $3.00 reduction off the basic rate. For details, contact your disposal company.

Paper and cardboard
  • Newspaper, including inserts and newsprint publications
  • Magazines, including catalogs and glossy paper
  • Mail, including envelopes (with or without plastic windows), white/colored office paper; junk/regular mail, binder paper, and gift paper (no plastic/foil lining)
  • Telephone books and catalogs
  • Cereal, cracker, cake mix boxes (no liners)
  • Brown paper bags
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Shredded paper (including staples and tape)
How to prepare: Flatten cardboard and laundry detergent boxes; remove plastic or foil lining from cereal and cracker boxes.

Please do not include:

  • Rubber Bands or plastic wrap from newspapers
  • Carbon paper or photographs
  • Soiled paper (i.e., facial tissue)
  • Books
  • Thermal fax paper
  • Plastic coated frozen food packaging or take-out containers
Plastic
  • Plastic containers (any color), including soda bottles, detergent, and shampoo bottles, labeled with the numbers 1 – 7 on the bottom of the container.
  • Plastic bottles, containers and packaging typically have a symbol that indicates the type of plastic resin from which the item was made. Click on FAST FACTS: Break the Plastic Code for more information.
How to prepare: Rinse containers to avoid odors and flatten containers to conserve space.

Please do not include:

  • Containers with plastic coating
  • Shrink wrap
  • Toys
  • Styrofoam (i.e., takeout containers or meat trays)
  • Garden hoses
  • Plastic pipes
  • Pool covers
Glass
  • Glass food and beverage containers only.
How to prepare: Remove and include caps; rinse containers lightly. Labels do not need to be removed.

Please do not include:

  • Window glass
  • Mirrors
  • Light bulbs
  • Dishware
  • Vases
Metal
  • Aluminum cans
  • Aerosol cans (empty)
  • Aluminum foil
  • Tin/bimetal cans
  • Metal food trays
  • Metal lids and caps from jars and bottles
  • Empty, dry paint cans
How to prepare: Please flatten cans to conserve space, lightly rinse, and squash metal food trays and roll foil into a ball.

Please do not include:

  • Scrap metal
  • Coat hangers
  • Propane tanks
