Animal Care and Control Services
Shelter staff rescues lost pets and makes every effort to reunite animals with their owners. Adoption services are provided for pets needing new homes. Low-cost spay/neuter services are available. Reports of inhumane treatment of animals or excessive dog barking are investigated. When appropriate, wildlife is relocated. Officers enforce state and local laws pertaining to animals. Licensing services are administered. Rescue programs answer the special needs of animals during disasters such as fires and earthquakes. Educational programs and animal visitations to rest homes are among the special events provided by the shelter staff.

Dog License Information
State law requires that all dogs over four months of age be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. Licensing protects your pet! You will be reunited quickly if your dog strays from home and is rescued by shelter staff. (Shelters are filled with animals whose owners said their pets "never leave home.") All monies collected from dog licensing are returned to the City of Thousand Oaks and help defray the cost of the Animal Care and Control program.

Annual license fees are $30 for an unaltered dog, $10 for an altered dog, and $5 for an altered dog owned by a senior citizen (60 yrs./with proof of age). A penalty of $20 is assessed for dog licenses not renewed on time. The City of Thousand Oaks dog license tag is a permanent stainless steel tag, valid for the dog's life. Licenses are sold at the Agoura Hills Shelter and at City Hall (Finance Department). Cats may be licensed through a voluntary program. Fees are $10 for unaltered cats and $5 for altered cats.
