Local Businesses Recognized for Green Business Certification

Three Thousand Oaks businesses were recently recognized for successfully completing the City of Thousand Oaks’ Green Business Certification Program. Swiss Re, Rind Print, and Justin Sycamore DDS, were formally recognized for their environmental stewardship by Mayor Claudia Bill De La Pena and the City Council at the April 25th Council meeting.

The Green Business Certification Program recognizes and rewards small and medium sized Thousand Oaks businesses that demonstrate a substantial and purposeful commitment to environmental stewardship. These businesses have taken significant steps to reduce their environmental impact by implementing internal programs in the areas of energy conservation, water efficiency, waste reduction, pollution prevention and green purchasing.

Swiss Re
The Swiss Re Group is a global insurance firm. Its Thousand Oaks office is located in a LEED Silver Certified building. Guided by Swiss Re's global sustainability framework, the office focuses on controlling environmental impacts in: energy, travel, paper, procurement, supply management, waste and recycling.

Rind Print
Rind Print reduces waste and environmental impacts through innovative print technique, digital technology and other eco-friendly practices. Office computers (laptops) are taken home each day, reducing redundancies in equipment and energy. They have implemented digital invoicing and proofing, eliminating paper waste and mailing resources. They use an on-demand hot water system and keep lighting use to a minimum. They are also striving for greater customer use of compostable packaging.

Justin Sycamore DDS
Justin Sycamore is a paperless dental office, storing patient files digitally rather than using paper charts. They also use digital x-ray equipment, which avoids the use of toxic developing chemicals. They installed a dry vacuum system, which does not use any water. The office installed skylights for natural lighting, and replaced all fluorescent T-12 lighting with recessed LED lights for better energy efficiency.

The Green Business program certifies small to medium-sized businesses in the office/retail, restaurant/food service, dental, garment cleaning, automotive, and landscaping sectors. The Thousand Oaks Green Business Certification Program is affiliated with the statewide California Green Business Network. Businesses interested in participating in the free program should visit our Green Business Certification page.
